We escaped the rain just in the nick of time at todays open handicap road race. Men, women and juniors all did 7.2km with a staggered start handicap format. First year member Darren Parlato was first across the line and in doing so won the impressive Bill Barrett Memorial Shield, one of the oldest contested in the club. Barrett was an inaugural member of Feilding Moa but sadly gave his life in WW2 in 1945.
Just 1 second behind Darren was the Colts winner Karl Werner, taking home the Webb Cup. Fastest Colt and overall fastest was Benjamin Wall in 26 minutes 39 seconds.
The Janine Wasley Memorial Cup was one by Tessa Webb, first on handicap and fastest womens time of 27:08.
The Reynolds Cup for women went to Rosie McIntyre who has steadily improved week on week. “My lungs were burning at the top of the James Rd hill” she says “but having other runners in front to chase kept me going.”
In the Boys/Girls 3km event Amber Duthie and Alex Willis had victories – these could be quite decisive handicap points won as we look now to prizegiving next week and the award of overall points champions for the whole season. Minimoa’s 1km was taken out by Arnya Burema today, with normal rival Millie Evans opting to step up to the 3km.
