Race Records Fall
Feilding Moa Aces and the Tri Camper A team (half of who are from Moa too) both came to the event targeting the Ten year old race record from Wanganui Harriers of 1 hour 44 minutes 32 seconds. Over the first three legs Moa Aces runners Marcus Karamanolis, Benjamin Wall and AJ Cornwall built up a two minute lead on Tri Campers (their team name reflected they were part of a three day Triathlon NZ camp held at Feilding for the weekend). So from all accounts the Tri Campers were looking well beaten by half way. But there team members didn’t see it that way. Leg 4 saw Samuel Phillips 15:13 lap pull Moa back by a minute. With the well performed Marcus Karamanolis (enjoying a “summer” break from his US athletics scholarship at Providence College) running next, it was expected Moa would pull away again. However Christian Davey put in an excellent run, literally matching Marcus stride for stride, both recording the same time of 16:35 for the undulating 4.74km lap . It was left to 14 year old Benjamin Wall to defend the one minute gap over Jake Jackson-Grammar. And he got to the finish with 4 seconds to spare!
Wanganui Harriers lose one record, but gain another
Christian Conder from Wanganui Harriers set a new record for the 4.542km Leg 4, running 14:46 to eclipse the 15 year old time from Michael Davey (Moa). Wanganui Harriers runners now hold all six lap records.
