The Anderson Rally cross country race at Dannevirke, organised jointly by Napier Harriers and Feilding Moa, saw 175 competitors from Wanganui to Hawkes Bay compete across individual grades plus for overall points for the top club.
Feilding Moa won the overall points and the Turnbull cup with 454 points from Napier Harriers, 177 and Palmerston North on 108.
The 2.35km course at the Dannevirke A&P Grounds included a farm section with several challenging log jumps and a steep uphill prior to the final 700m of flat. Senior men and women and the masters men 35-59 years completed four laps, 9.4km. The Under-20 men and Men 60-plus did three laps but started at the same time.
There was a large lead bunch in the early stages with Under-20 men Andre Le Pine-Day, Jamie Dennis and Sam Parry footing it with seniors Josh Dunstan-Brown and Damien Lardner (all Feilding Moa). The strength of Lardner on the hill section saw him take a narrow lead over Le Pine-Day and steadily move away from the other seniors. His winning time of 34 minutes 1 second was with Dunstan Brown 35:37 and Niam Macdonald 36:40. Le Pine-Day won the U20 race in 25:05 from Dennis 26:06 and Parry 26:51.
The Men 60 race of three laps, 7km, saw the lead change several times between Stephen Lindsay of Napier Harriers and Rob Dabb from Feilding Moa. Dabb regained the lead on the final hill but Lindsay came back on the flat around the stables section to take the win by 6 seconds in 34:26.
The masters 35-59 was won by David Lovelock (PNAHC) in 38:12 from Mark Fisher (Napier) 40:19 and Andrew Davenport (PNAHC) 41:44. Lovelock also won the M35 grade.
The Senior women was won by Kate O’Malley (Napier) 44:41 from club mate Nicole Sattler 47:14 and Anita Chan (Feilding) 47:46.
Women U18 and U20 did two laps, 4.7km. The Dunnett-Welch sisters from Napier, 3rd and 5th at the NZ Secondary Schools championships last weekend in the Year 9 race, stepped up to face older competition and showed them a clean pair of heels. Sophie was a narrow winner in 19:37 from Jamie 19:37. Briana Lee, also from Napier, was next across the line in 20:12 to win the Under-20 grade from Stephanie Walker (Feilding) 21:42.
Under 18 men also did two laps. Hastings Harrier pair Karsen Vesty and Lorcan Rabbitte ran side by side for most of the race until Vesty broke away on the last time up the hill to win in 17:22 from Rabbitte 17:36 and Robin Moore (Napier) 18:19.
