30 May 2020 Opening Run

Our season got underway a couple of months late but a fine and warm day at Timona Park saw over 100 runners and walkers enjoy the great outdoors.

The days activities were split into two identical events to stay within the 100 person Covid-19 Alert Level 2 guidelines.

The 12.30pm start had about 65 people hear Club patron Bruce Wilson declare the season open. We had a near record number of Minimoa’s in the 1km event, with Joshua Addenbrooke winning the 12.30pm race and Harry Long winning the 2pm race. Fastest girl was Lucie Thomson from Kapiti Tri Club, and then very close to Mya Thirkell and Phoebe Lintott.

Boys and Girls 7-13 years did one long lap of Timona Park, 2.5km, with Hayleye Cornwall in the 2:15pm race having the best overall time of 9:51 from the 12:45pm winner Charlie Hook in 10:05. I suspect if they had raced head-to-head the gap may have been closer. Mya Thomson was second fastest girl in 10:38 and Filip Martin second of the boys in 10:36.

The 5km females were headed in by Poppy Rae-Macgregor in 19:54 fromher mother, Karis, 20:30 then close between Bella Ives in race 1 (21:25) and Tina Solja from race 2 in 21:22. In the Colts grade (boys 14-17), Samuel Stichbury was a clear winner in 18:12 from Reuben Duker.

The 7.5km saw the senior men up against a talented group of Under-20’s. Two of the U20’s, Sam Phillips and Andre Le Pine-Day took the field through the first lap in 8:03, with Nick Johnston 5 seconds back. Nick was the one who slowed up the least over the next two laps, taking the win in 25:09 from Andre 25:32. Adam Martin also travelled well over the final two laps moving up to take third in 26:56.

Next Saturday we are running at the Thompson Farm on Makino Rd. See the Club Calendar tab for details – we will most likely follow a similat two-event format.
