Club captain Paul Wasley would be well pleased with t e turn out of 14 teams at the ANZAC Relay held at Victoria Park in Wanganui on 29 April
It was a mass start of all the women’s and men’s teams. Through the first kilometre Sam Stichbury had the joint lead with Toby Caro from Wanganui Collegiate. Over the last km Sam stretched that out to a handy 15 secs or so running 6 min 3 sec for the 2km lap.
Courtney Fitzgibbon (the NZ U18 steeplechase champion) was equally impressive, leading in on lap one from Louise Brabyn (Wanganui Collegiate), running the fastest women’s lap of the day in 7:03
RESULTS ( Feilding Moa only):
Stcihbury handed off to Andre Le Pine-Day, and with a blistering 6:01 stretched our lead out over Wanganui to nearly 30 seconds. He handed off to the NZ U16 secondary schools triathlon champ, Alec Ball, running a tidy 6:07 to give team captain Isaac Murphy a handy 33 second cushion for the final 2km. And he was going to need it all as chasing was the NZ U20 1500m/3000m champion Daniel Sinclair. Half way through Sinclair had cut 10 seconds in to Murphy’s lead, but we crossed the line still 10 seconds clear to take the Men’s trophy for the third year in a row.
Meanwhile the women’s race was also turning into a nail biter. Millie Evans kept us in the lead and handed over to Millie McLean. Wanganui Collegiate caught us on that section, and with the well performed Rosa Meyer running their last leg Wanganui went on to claim the win while we earned a very respectable second spot
Special mention to some of our youngest team members who ran a 2km leg. Abby Leckie and Frank Skou (both 8) ran impressively.
