We had 8 teams contest the ANZAC Day relay at Whanganui’s Victoria Park.
Both our Men’s A and Women’s A teams came second and we also took 3rd place in the womens’ relay. The format was 4 x 2km laps
The women’s race was a thrilling duel between Palmerston North and Feilding. Our lead off runner, Lizzie Deane-Jackson matched stride for stride with Whanganui’s Sally Gibbs, eventually coming in slightly ahead in 7min 19sec, with our B team tied for 3rd with PNAHC nearly a minute back. Lucy Evans maintained our lead and handed a 40-second advantage to Dot Starzak with PNAHC now a clear 2nd. An outstanding third-lap of 7:10 by PNAHC’s Olivia Clay-McDowell cut the deficit to 13 seconds. Our final leg runner Madi Honeyfield had PNAHC’s 400m/800m specialist Emma Verry chasing hard. Madi did well to only yield 3 seconds over the first km. However Verry gradually closed and ran shoulder to shoulder with 200m to go – taking the win by just 8 seconds.
Many of our teams included 8-10 year olds, with Harry Long (8:18) and Declan Cox (8:37) in particular having outstanding runs.
