The 100th anniversary of the Dorne Cup cross country race at Trentham Park, Wellington last Saturday resulted in an historic win by the Feilding Moa senior men’s team.
This was just the fifth occasion the cup has been won by a club outside of the Wellington region. It had previously been won by Napier Harriers (1967) Massey University (1991,1993) and Feilding Moa (2023). While Wellington Scottish have dominated the last 100 years with 50 wins.
The Feilding Moa team had all six members finish in the 8km race finish within the top twenty. Eric Speakman (Victoria University, the defending teams champion) won the race from Harry Dixon of Feilding Moa. Other Feilding Moa finishers were Andre Le Pine-Day (4th), Luke Scott (10th), Damien Lardner (12th), Dan Palfreyman (22nd) and Sam Stichbury (23rd). The team points score of 73 was well ahead of the nearest rival Wellington Harriers on 99.
Manawatu-Wanganui runners also featured on the podium in other races. Luke Williams (Feilding Moa) won the boys Under-10’s 1km with a thrilling 3-way battle for the lead with two Trentham Harriers runners. Sally Gibbs (Wanganui) won the 6km Women’s 60-64 event. Second placings went to Justin Cunningham (PNAHC) in the Under-20 men’s and Jo Speary (Feilding Moa) in the Women 65-69. Wendy Cottrell-Teahan (Feilding Moa) was third in the Women’s 50-54 age grade.
